Balancing employees' privacy with the boss's right to know

December 15th, 2007

Computers may have made some things easier, but they have also changed a number of things. You may observe your employees. They seem to be working. And at the same time they may be simply chatting online or reading news. Should you try to spying on them? Or is there perhaps a more honest and transparent way of computer monitoring?

Sure, a couple of years ago there was little superiors could do. They had to install spyware. Spyware is the name for software applications that make screenshots, copy text the user inputs into their computer, monitor traffic. So you get control. What happens is that people start having bad thoughts about you. You can lose respect of your people, because you are effectively intruding into their privacy.

There is one solution that may help you out of this mess. It is a system of employee monitoring called Work Examiner. It allows for transparent system of monitoring and self monitoring that does not violate privacy, because it monitors the time spent online rather than traffic (unlike various proxies). The flexible reporting system produces a lot of very useful information that you would definitely prefer to random print screens done while doing employee monitoring.

Currently we are offering Work Examinor for employee monitoring in two different packages. Both versions supervise application jobs, websites attended, how much time they spend doing what tasks. Both versions allow restrictions on access to selected websites or applications. The Professional version allows for different access rights to employee statistic so that everybody has only the access to the data the have the right to see.

Coming to the question of honesty using our program you do not get screen shots or some sensitive data you do not need. Instead you receive cleverly crafted employee monitoring reports regarding the time and application use. More importantly, this system encourages self control and more proper time use by your underlingsEven better, this system helps your workers to use work time more efficiently and self-monitor their own computer use.
